MEDICAL CODING

               The process of turning documentation of healthcare services (patient interactions, diagnoses, and procedures) into standardized numeric and/or alphanumeric codes is known as medical coding. These tagged data are subsequently used to submit claims for payment or other ongoing healthcare services to Medicare, Medicaid, insurance providers, and other payers.

The following are some examples of regular duties for positions in medical coding:

• Converting patient data into the proper medical codes
• Checking medical records and paperwork for any gaps in information
• Carrying out chart audits
• Gathering, analyzing, and archiving patient medical data
• Ensuring that all writing is grammatically sound
• Adhering to medical coding rules and regulations
