What are the different coding systems used in medical coding?

MEDICAL CODING

Medical coding very simply, is the conversion of patient medical information into an alphanumeric code. To learn the ins and outs of medical coding, medical coders rely on their familiarity with anatomy, medical terminology, disease, diagnostic procedures, and therapies. Medical coding is not a subjective process; rather, it is a standardised procedure based on centralised and uniform medical coding textbooks, which are considered as the holy grail of the medical coding industry.

  • ICD-10-CM, or the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision: Diagnoses and symptoms are categorised and coded using this approach. It offers a uniform method for recording and monitoring illnesses, injuries, and other medical issues.
  • Current Procedural Terminology (CPT): CPT codes are used by healthcare professionals to describe medical operations and services. The American Medical Association (AMA) created and maintains these codes.
  • HCPCS codes, which are used to identify and bill for healthcare services, supplies, and equipment not covered by CPT codes, are known as the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS). There are two different levels of codes in it; Level I codes are the same as CPT codes, whilst Level II codes are used for non-physician services and supplies.
